The Arts House

This 6-week course focuses on drawing and painting.

During the first 3 weeks, students will explore foundational drawing practices, including contour, gesture, sighting, and value. We’ll work with a variety of materials, including graphite, Conté, and charcoal.

The second half of the course introduces the foundations of acrylic painting, including colour mixing, colour theory, and clear step-by-step methods for building value in your paintings.

Whether you’re new to drawing and painting or simply looking to strengthen your skills, this course provides a supportive introduction to the fundamentals while giving you plenty of opportunity to practice and experiment.

Class 1: Exploring line and values using sphere and cube studies

Class 2: Gesture and Contour studies from still life

Class 3: Drawing the Face, intro to portraiture basics

Class 4: colour mixing and values

Class 5: washes and step by step painting techniques to build depth

Class 6: painting techniques continued
